End of Year Exhibition Telford 2007
Hayley Mathers:
Perfection:
This work explores the theme of perfection, specifically a quest to achieve something flawless and ultimately without character. To explore this I have undertaken a process to make a perfect replica of a screw made out of wax. I have used wax as a symbol of human flaws and as a reference to master craftsmen who coat screws in wax as part of a process to achieve a perfect finish to a piece of furniture. The work shown documents the successes and failures of the project and an examination between handmade and machine produced products.
Changes:
The concept of this project was an investigation of, the inevitability of change. The idea for this came from the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, which, is planned to be part of a big regeneration project to make Edinburgh more of an international city. My work from this observes the way that these changes are part of a bigger picture and that the overall character and culture within Edinburgh will be unaffected. The piece I am showing here shows this through a machine that is attempting to produce a series of regulated motions and fails.
